New Westminster – On January 18 at approximately 3:30 am the New Westminster Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a witness who believed they were hearing someone breaking into the condominium mail room. When officers arrived on scene they located a suspect a short distance away. This suspect was detained and shortly thereafter arrested for break and enter.
“Our officers are working to determine if this suspect is connected to other recent mail theft investigations,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “We’re very thankful this resident did the right thing and recognized that a crime in progress needed to be called in to 9-1-1.”
The New Westminster Police Department is employing different tools in an effort to combat mail theft. In December 2022 the New Westminster Police Department launched a Bait Package Program. Residents are encouraged to pick up posters that advertise the Bait Package Program from the New Westminster Police Department front lobby. These posters can serve as a deterrent to would be package thieves. Reported instances of mail theft decreased in 2024 with 89 reports compared to 101 in 2023.
