Beware of online romance scams this Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, the New Westminster Police Department is warning residents to stay vigilant against online dating scams. Fraudsters often pose as potential romantic partners to gain trust, only to exploit it.

Watch for these red flags:

  • They declare their love before meeting in person.
  • Their profile lacks details or seems too good to be true.
  • They quickly ask to move the conversation off the dating site.
  • Sooner or later, they request money.

If someone you’ve only communicated with online or by phone asks for money, stop and think—it’s likely a scam. Never send funds or share personal or financial information with someone you haven’t met in person. If you suspect fraud, report it immediately to the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
